In March of 2024, I embarked on an unforgettable journey to Honolulu, Hawaii, marking my first visit to the tropical paradise. To say I was excited would be an understatement – the prospect of exploring a new destination sounded amazing.
However, as I soon discovered, the journey from Maryland to Hawaii wasn’t without its challenges. The time difference took its toll, leaving me feeling jet-lagged and in need of rest. My first tip for fellow travelers from the East Coast of the US is to build in a day of rest at the beginning and end of your trip to adjust to the time difference and make the most of your stay.
Upon arriving at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort, I was greeted by its impressive size and convenient location near various attractions. While the resort offered several dining options, I found that venturing off-site led me to discover even more delicious culinary experiences, such as the mouthwatering shrimp and rice dish I enjoyed at a local bar.
My accommodations in the Tapa tower provided comfort and convenience, although the view from my room left something to be desired. Despite overlooking another hotel building and the back pool, catching a glimpse of the beach from afar added a touch of serenity to my stay. I learned from fellow guests that the Rainbow Tower boasted better views, albeit with less updated rooms – a trade-off that is up to personal preferences when choosing accommodations.
Exploring Honolulu felt like uncovering a blend of Miami’s vibrant energy with a cleaner beach and friendlier residents. With an abundance of family-friendly activities and attractions within easy reach, Honolulu proved to be a bustling hub of excitement and adventure. While the city may not offer the tranquil ambiance of other Hawaiian islands, its lively atmosphere ensures that visitors are always entertained.
As I reflect on my time in Honolulu, I’m filled with gratitude that I got to go and have the experience. While I may long for the peaceful tranquility of remote islands seen on TV, Honolulu’s vibrant charm has left an indelible mark on my heart. For those planning their own Hawaiian getaway, I encourage you to embrace the excitement and embrace the spirit of aloha that awaits you.
